VIOLENCE music video - out now!
Hey everyone!
It’s been a minute since we’ve been in touch! Unless you came to HTCAP weekender in which case, hey it’s me again as if I never left. I’ll send a big sexy email debriefing the weekend soon but for now -
My first single and music video VIOLENCE is out today and I wanted to share it with you all! The music is by my bestie Piglet, the mastering and mixing by Patrick King, and the video by the incredibly talented DIY legend Asher.
The song was originally about how it feels to move through space at night, as someone who is visibly queer and either presenting as hyper femme or as queer and masc - all that language just to say, someone who is effected by the patriarchy and sometimes followed home by it.
As we started to work on it, it became less about my personal experiences and more about wanting to be in solidarity with other peoples experiences, with other peoples choices. To speak up and out for the people who are told they have responded badly when they choose to retaliate rather than accept abuse. The song is for the girl whose had enough and takes off her heel to hit someone with it, for the person whose sick of being asked wether they are a boy or a girl and decides to spit at the bus window instead, for the person who returns to the scene they were hurt to write their name on the wall in grafitti. Its not necessarily about revenge, perhaps more about what it means to be disempowered so often that your small gesture of empowerment becomes one everyone else might tut at or recoil from.
The song is also dedicated to my own 10+ years of direct action organising and to all the people I have met along the way that have shaped my life and my politics. These are people that now, today, are thinking of ways to escalate tactics in the UK in solidarity with Palestine. People who do not expect Palestine as an oppressed people to down their weapons and accept Isreal’s genocide, but understand that in revolutionary uprisings, there will be violence.
I want the song to remind people that the most successful actions are the ones that have immediate effect, and that its our responsibility to be in support of activists choosing to use increasingly hostile means against our government.
Anyway, my EP launch is on Nov 16th and it would mean a lot to me if some of you come down! It’ll be the last event I’m putting on myself for the year so come down and get involved.
I’ll hopefully see you there, and I’ll see you on the streets for the many many actions happening over the coming weeks.
